IBM Releases XML Site, Tools
- IBM on Monday launched a website dedicated to XML and posted nine free, downloadable XML development tools. The site includes news, tutorials, and sample files. Last week, XML was endorsed by Oracle, which added support for the markup language to its Oracle 8i database.

Macromedia Director 7, Shockwave 7 Slated For December
- Macromedia said Monday it will ship updated versions of Director and Shockwave in December. The developer annouced upgrades to its multimedia development environment, Director 7 Shockwave Internet Studio, as well as to its player, Shockwave 7, promising more efficient media-streaming and faster start-up. Windows 98, Mac OS 8.5, and AOL 4.0 all ship with Shockwave players included. Director 7 Internet Studio will sell for $999; upgrades, for $499. The player is a free download at Macromedia's website.

Adobe Chief Joins CRN Hall Of Fame
- Adobe Systems' CEO and co-founder John Warnock joined Computer Reseller News' hall of fame at Comdex/Fall '98 in Las Vegas this week. Warnock, who co-founded Adobe with Charles Geschke in 1982, was honored for his role in "revolutionizing the desktop publishing industry," according to CRN's editor-in-chief, Robert Faletra, particularly for his contributions to the PostScript language. Tim Berners-Lee, Vint Cerf, and Steve Wozniak also made the cut this year.
