If you plan on having a webpage on the
internet you will need to find a company to put it. There are thousands of companies that
will host your website for a fee, and several companies that will give you a webpage for
free. Below I have compiled a list of resources to help you get started in your search for
a company to host your site.
BudgetWeb - Huge searchable list of
webhosting companies.
CIHost - This is the company that
previously hosted Webmaster Resources. Although they where good when I started out with
them, over the months service and reliability declined. For the grand finale in November,
their server upgrades screwed up, taking down some sites for up to 24 hours and leaving me
with no email/telnet access for almost an entire day. During this entire crisis their
phone system was down making it impossible to get immiete tech support. Not
Recommended.
CheckDomain - Look up the
availability of almost every country specific domain name (ie. .ca .us etc)
CGI-Free - Free CGI Bin space.
FreeServers - Free webhosting.
You get 12MB of disk space, unlimited e-mail addresses, free counter, guestbook and more.
HostFind - A search engine that will
help you find the right webhosting company for you.
HostIndex - A web hosting directory
containing information about hundreds of hosts. They even have a free domain name
registration tool.
HostInvestigator - A new
webhosting directory, with a great search engine. They even allow visitors to post reviews
of webhosting companies they've used. The top hosts really seem to be ranked by quality
rather then how much money they spend on advertising at HostInvestigator.
HostSearch - A great place to
begin searching for a webhosting company.
HyperMart - Free webpages
for business. 10MB, CGI-bin directory, FrontPage 98 extensions, and more! You can even
have a domain name and use Hypermart as your host. However a banner ad must appear on
every page on your site.
NameSave - Register a domain name
for free.
Register.com - These people will
register your domain name for you saving you lots of paperwork, for free a service
for which other companies charge $50+.
TraceRoute
Servers - A large list of TraceRoute servers around the world that you can use to test
your web hosting company.
WebHostList - The internets
premier list of professional webhosting companies, including ratings for the top 25. Note:
This site seems to rank the Top 25 webhosts by how much money they spend on advertising
rather then the actual quality of the host.
Xoom - The best place for a free
webpage, 11MB, no ads, fast server, easy to remember URL.
Zarcrom
- This is the company that currently hosts this site. So far I have had no problems with
them and have found their technical support fantastic. They put up to 75 sites
on each server, and often less. Each server has a 150 RISC processor, 128 MB of RAM, and a
10 GIG SCSI Hard Drive and can easily handle 700,000 to 1 million hits per day. The server
I'm currently hosted on has 24 other sites on it, compare that to 300 to 500 sites on the
servers of other companies. Their servers are extremely fast and so far there have been no
outages. Highly Recommended. |
